Fleming, scored a try because he played to the. whistle and the Canterbury players did not. The ball was not properly hooked from a scrum and while the Canterbury players were waiting for Mr V. C. Empson to blow his whistle, Fleming scooped the ball up, dashed past several very surprised Canterbury men and scored a good try. in the earlier game, between Christchurch and Linwood, the Linwood centre, R. Spriggs, raced away from all opposition and crossed the line. As he attempted to ground the ball with one hand while running, however, he dropped it and a certain try was lost.
