DISPOSAL OF N.Z. PRODUCE

Bulk Purchase “Dead As The Dodo”

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 28. Bulk purchase was “as dead as the dodo.” said the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr E. H. Halstead) in the House of Representatives this afternoon, when discussing a petition on the cost of living. Mr Halstead claimed that the Opposition speakers had said they would revert to bulk-buying arrangements for the disposal of New Zealand produce overseas. There was, however, no country outside Socialist or Communist countries which engaged in bulk purchase today. Any government which went back to bulk purchase would le#l New Zealand to ruin. After several members, including the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Nash), had. denied that any Opposition member had said the party would revert to bulk purchase, Mr Halstead amended his remarks to say that it could be Inferred from various statements that Labour favoured this course.
