THE AUCKLAND CRITICS - SAID ABOUTSAID ABOUTSAID ABOUT—“THE GOOD OLD DAYS” “THE GOOD OLD DAYS” '“THE GOOD OLD DAYS” “GOOD OLD DAYS” ARE BACK WITH A DIFFERENCE. "The Good X)ld Days,” Celebrity Circuit; The Playhouse. By D.L. That old vaudeville magic cast its spell at The Playhouse last night, when a full house gave a tremendous welcome to "The Good Old Days” company. For some it was a ( . welcome back, for some famous and ’ familiar veterans of variety head the bill. They carried their years lightly and proved as personable as ever. But for all its unashamed sentiment, this is vaudeville with a difference, a lavish sparkling difference. No old-time music hall, and few of today’s for that matter, saw a rapidfire succession of acts mounted so splendidly, dressed so lavishly, or put together so agreeably. The show’s music is stronger than its humour, and its spectacle and j dancing are its strongest point of i aIL But the old stagers, Jim Gerald , and George Wallace, could still raise < plenty of laughs, and with the singers there was perhaps eVen a tear or two. FINE FORM < Miurice Colleano, of the* rubber • neck and the naughty-boy eyes, - was in fine form and the vibrant personality of Jenny Howard quickly won the audience and had them clamouring for more. Musical director Enso Toppano did extraordinarily well in the face of orchestral difficulties that are only too familiar, and with Peggy Mortimer gave a remarkable display of musical versatility. For good measure, there are Jandy, , the musical clown, Morry Barling,

acrobats, a trick cyclist, and a quintet of chorus "girls” for whom the claim of a combined weight of half a ton is wholly believable.—“ Star.” BRIGHT, BOUNCY VAUDEVILLE FULL HOUSE ENJOYS ACTS A packed house gave the vaudeville show, “The Good Old Days,” a rousing’ reception when it opened at The Playhouse last night. Although the emphasis was on nostalgia with a quartet of variety old-timers. George Wallace. Jim Gerald, Millie Hansen, and Queenie Paul, to provide the memories, it was the cracking pace of the acts and the lively polish of the whole cast that set the seal of success on the entertainment. Although restricted by the small stage, the sets, which must be the most lavish ever seen in variety shows in New Zealand, showed to advantage and the dressing was of the same high standard. The English comedienne, Jenny Howard, brought down the house with her bouncy numbers. There was no need for any microphone for her and one wished that some of the younger members of the cast had not leaned so heavily on amplified aids for their acts. Maurice Colleano, as the rubber-necked American sailor, was also at his cheeky best. Of the younger performers, Peggy Mortimer, a personable singer, Wilbur Wheeler, a trick cyclist, the Balcombes, two dazed acrobatic dancers, and the Flat Tops, with lanky Tom r Parker giving a convulsive performance, added pace to the show. The chorus, one of the most attractive seen for many years, danced crisply. It was a bright show that sent the crowd home smiling. —"Herald.” BOX PLANS OPEN WED. BOX PLANS OPEN WED.
