TRANSFER BAN TO STAY
Auckland Remit Defeated
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 26. A remit by Auckland to have the ban on players transferring overseas changed to allow for certain dispensations was defeated by seven votes to four at the .annual meeting of the New Zealand Rugby League tonight. The remit proposed that limited clearances be given to players on educational trips to register as amateurs in overseas countries for a maximum period of a year, and that international players who have represented New Zealand in at least 12 test matches and have reached 25 vears of age be allowed to negotiate for professional contracts, only two each year being allowed to go over“The present transfer ban,” said Mr McGregor (Auckland), "goes too far. It is morally wrong to interfere too much with a person’s private life.” The Otago delegate, Mr M. A. Robson, supported Mr McGregor. Mr W. Swift (West Coast) said: "The £50.000 that our assets have increased by since 1947 is here only because we have the teams good enough to earn it. Our first duty is to amateur Rugby League in New Zealand. If we lifted the ban, we would be reduced to a feeding ground for wealthy Australian clubs.”
