MITITARY FUNERAL FOR OFFICER
CAPTAIN W. C. HASTINGS
A military funeral was held in Christchurch yesterday afternoon for Captain W. C. Hastings, Royal New Zealand Electrical and Technical Engineers (retired). Captain Hastings died at his home on Tuesday. He was 60. Non-commissioned officers of the R.N.Z.E.M.E. formed the bearer party and a firing party from the corps was also present. Last Post and Reveille was sounded by Captain J. L. Napier, R.N.Z.E.M.E. (retired). Formerly an officer of the Regular Force, Captain Hastings retired in October, 1955,. after 40 years’ service in the Army. Beginning as an armaments officer, he served overseas in World War I, and took up his command in the Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, a corps which was then in its infancy. In the last 20 years of his Army career he commanded the Southern Militry District’s armaments and general workshops. Captain Hastings was awarded the M.B.E. towards the end of World War 11.
