BOWLS

Post-Section Play Begins In Championship Fours

(New Zealana Press Association) AUCKLAND, January 18. Thirty-two teams of the 148 which began play on Monday still have hopes of victory in the fours championship of the New Zealand howling tournament in Auckland. The field of 98 qualifiers was reduced to this number in the first day of postsection play at four clubs today.

By tomorrow evening, after two more rounds of play, only eight teams will still be entitled to think of themselves as possible championship winners. A favourite of the tournament. J. Pirret. of Tuakau. meanwhile has qualified for the final of the singles championship and at 2 o’clock tomorrow afternoon he and J. Lobb, the 68-year-old player from New Plymouth, will play their match at Carlton. What with wind, weather and traffic department, not all of the 98 teams enjoyed their day in Auckland today. Because of glassy greens, especially at Carlton and Remuera. the wind was extremely troublesome and, in fact, sometimes made the bowls more a matter of luck than good management. The weather although still highly favourable, was somewhat fatiguing for players who had been going strongly since last Monday week. Parking Tickets In the morning, some bright bowler parked at an angle to the kerb and several others followed suit. All got traffic tickets. In the afternoon. “No Stopping” signs displayed on the grass at the foot of Domain drive were carelessly overlooked, first by one driver and then by a number of imitators. A traffic officer mysteriously sprang out of the ground, unseen and unheard, but he left his mark behind him. Pirret. who played magnifi-

Icently in defeating J. M. Morris, of Hamilton, in the semi-final of i the singles in the morning, was I defeated in the fours in the afterj noon because of three drives ' which could be called unlucky, ! injudicious or both. One cost him 3, another 2 and the third 3. Thus a patiently-won lead over W. H. Hampton, of Naenae, was jeopardised and then dissipated but no-one, least of all Pirret and his team, would think of disputing the merit of the victory which Hampton so carefully and skilfully forged. Dangerous Driver Another dangerous driver was the old pairs champion and 1954 Empire Games representative. E. H. Ravenwood, of North East Valley, Dunedin. At one stage, quite soon in the piece, he had A. Connew, of Carlton, down by 2-11. Then Ravenwood essayed one drive. This cost him four shots. A little while later he tried again. This cost him six. Few bowlers living could give Connew 10 in two ends and expect to get away with it and Ravenwood was not among them. A cherry little hero of the day was retired farmer now living at Mount Maunganui whose team has yet to be beaten. J. R. Marshall, the man concerned, is 74, but did net take up bowls until seven years ago, by which time he had decided that he could not longer hope to gallop about the tennis court. G. A. Crowley, the man who was once commanded as a mere youth to play the great Maxwell Walker before the GovernorGeneral, Earl Jellicoe, 34 years later came to grief at the hands of W. Tumilty, a burly police sergeant from Port Ahuriri. Crowley was 23-19 on the twentythird end. Results:— Singles Quarter-final: J. M. Morris (Hamilton) beat E. P. Exelby (Frankton Junction), 23-13.
