MR MACMILLAN’S GOVERNMENT

Emphasis On Younger Ministers (N2 Press Association —Copyright) (Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDON, January 17. The Prime Minister, Mr Macmillan, today announced 22 more Government appointments, with continued emphasis on younger men. Three members of the Eden Government have been dropped, and the former Minister of Supply, Mr Maudling. has been made spokesman for the new Ministry of Power in the House of Commons. The three to go are Mr Robin Turton, who was Sir Anthony Eden's Minister for Health, Lord Reading, his Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, and Mr A. R. W. Low, who was Minister of State at the Board of Trade.

The appointments bring the number in the new Government to 39.

On Monday, Mr Macmillan announced 17 top Cabinet posts manned by men of an average age of 53 —two years younger than the average in the Eden Administration.

Mr Maudling, who becomes Paymaster-General, takes a salary cut of £2OOO a year from the £5OOO he earned as Supply Minister. He is hailed in London newspapers today as “Mr Power" —because he will have the job of representing Sir Percy Mills, the man who will shape Britain’s atom future, in the House of Lords. Sir Anthony Eden’s Minister for Air, Mr Nigel Birch, also accepted a junior post—Economic Secretary to the Treasury—and dropped £2OOO in salary. The Earl of Perth got his first Government post as Minister of State for the Colonies, and the Earl of Selkirk becomes First Lord of the Admiralty. Among the promotions are Mr George Ward (Air), Mr Aubrey Jones (Supply), Mr Dennis Vosper (Health), Mr Hugh Molson (Works) and Mr Ernest Marples (Paymaster-General). A detailed list is:— First Lord of the Admiralty: The Earl of Selkirk, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster in the Eden Government, who replaces Lord Hailsham. Minister for Air: Mr George Ward, aged 49, a former Air Under-Secretary, and Secretary to the Admiralty. Minister for War: Mr John Hare, confirmed in office. Minister of Supply: Mr Aubrey Jones, former Minister of Fuel and Power. Minister of Pensions and National Insurance: Mr John Boyd-Carpenter, aged 48. confirmed in post. Minister of Health: Mr Dennis Vosper. aged 41, Secretary to the Ministry of Education in the Eden Administration. Minister of Works: Mr Hugh Molson. aged 55. Paymaster-General: Mr Reginald Maudling, aged 39. who succeeds Sir Walter Monckton. Posts Held By Peers Mr Macmillan also confirmed the ministerial appointments of two peers. They are the Earl of Munster, aged 50 (Minister without Portfolio) and Lord Strathclyde, aged 65 (Minister of State at the Scottish Office).

The Earl of Munster had the same title in the Eden Government, where his task was to assist the Marquess of Salisbury with Government business in the House of Lords. Lord Strathclyde, formerly Commander Thomas Galbraith, has had his Scottish Office post since 1955. when he was raised to the peerage. Mr Macmillan appointed two Ministers of State for Foreign Affairs —Commander Allan Noble, aged 48. and Mr David OrmsbyGore, aged 38. Commander Noble held the same post after the resignation of Mr Anthony Nutting in protest against the intervention in Egypt and Mr Ormsby-Gore served in the Eden Administration as an Under-Secretary at the Foreign Office.
