YACHTING CORNWELL CUP CONTEST
New Plymouth Wins Trophy
(New Zealand Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, January 16.
Proving far faster in lighter conditions. the New Plymouth crew. B. Thomas and I. Barry, won two races to make it three wins and win the Cornwell Cup for 1957 when the fifth and sixth races of the New Zealand junior yachting championship were held at New Plymouth today.
Both races were contested in light breezes, and New Plymouth romped away to score good wins. Once the boat was in the lead nobody looked like catching it. Although not first away in the morning race. New Plymouth sailed straight through the fleet to take the lead at the windward mark and from then on went further into the lead.
The only interest left was the fight for second place between Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch, which finished in that order.
New Plymouth jumned out from the start in the afternoon race and held the lead. Results:—
Fifth Race.—New Plymouth (B. Thomas and I. Barry) 1, Auckland (A. Brown and D. Reid) 2, Wellington (B. Julian and N. Shepherd) 3. Then followed Christchurch, Plimmerton. Lvttelton. Manakau, Kaiapoi. Wanganui. Tauranga. Otego. Paremata. and Nelson. Sixth Race.—New Plymouth 1. Tauranga (J. Gilpin and P. Watkins) 2. Lyttelton (D. and R. Eastmond) 3. Then followed Wellington. Christchurch.
