trotting STAR WISE WINS GREYMOUTH CUP

The Hussley trainer, O. E Hooper, produced the winner of the Greymouth Cup for the fourth ime when Starwise decisively w°n the race on the second day of the Greymouth Trotting Club's summer meeting on Saturday. Starwise was handily placed in a bunched field and escaped, most of the jostling for position. Once into the straight he quickly took advantage of an opening and ran on strongly to beat Red Hackle mtc second, with another lightlvis U e PP t°Mr e d d candidate in Synchron-

starw ise is a four-year-old ge.ciing by Springbok from Star Ace. At his previous start he had Wbv b F a !> e Z by . a nose b y Reason "hy at Addington earlier in the week. Starwise should extend his record soon.

The second leg of the double the Empire Handicap, was won by Johnny Hall. The StarwiseJohnny Hall combination returned £lO 7s 6d for £l. The Empire Handicap was run about 35 minutes late. Until then the meeting had been up to time, lhe delay was due to the failure to open more totalisator windows to enable holders of tickets on the hot favourite, Starwise, to redeem them on the second leg. There wer .® . 1 1 on S . Queues at the four available windows from the time they opened and it was obvious they could not handle the tickets offering It was not until a New Zealand Trotting Conference executive member spoke to committee members and some in the queue started to call out that two extra windows were opened. The meeting was held in gloriously fine weather before a large crowd.

Totalisator investments amoun#?iß9tOin£2B'6s?u 10s ’ inc l ud ing i. 3562 10s on the double, compared with £34.307 10s last year. The total for the two davs was £50,528. compared with £60,270 last year. Greymouth Cup Starwise was always handily placed in the Greymouth Cup and he finished on much too strongly for the others over the final halffurlong. Starwise received a perfect run all the way and was not forced over as much ground as many of the others. The field was bunched all the way. Red Hackle making the early pace. Coronation Hall took over at the end of six furlongs, with Phantasy racing past him six furlongs farther on. Synchronise, which was slow away, raced up to shade Phantasy with two and a half furlongs to run, but Phantasy came again on the inside to be on terms with Synchronise at the straight entrance. Red Hackle, Starwise and Charleston were together just behind them, with Radiant Diamond Coronation Hall and Johnny Derby also handy. Once into the straight Synchronise moved clear, to be challenged by Starwise. Red Hackle then put in his claim, but Starwise always had his measure and he won well by half a length. Synchronise paced a useful race for third, a length and a half from Red Hackle, with four lengths to Charleston, which was slow away and covered a lot of extra ground. Coronation Hall was three lengths back fifth, with similar gaps to Johnny Derby and Phantasy, which stepped badly over the last furlong. *

Bracken Brae broke badly at the tstart and was pulled up.

The Second Leg Johnny Hall recorded a sound performance to win the second leg of the double, the Empire Handicap. He ran out and collided with Ben Lee at the start, losing a big stretch o: ground. He was tenth at the end of three furlongs and with half a mile to run had dropped one place farther back, although he was not far from the pacemaker, Weekender. He started his run in the back straight and turning for home he was handy to Weekender, Brittania, Disraeli, and Goldbransen, with Half Back, Mighty Midas and Isidorus next. Johnny Hall took the lead early in the run home and he lasted long enough to beat Goldbransen by half a length. Goldbransen had every chance. He finished very strongly in the straight and was doing better than any of the others at the post. Disraeli was always close up and he battled on for third a short length from Goldbransen. with a length and a half .to Brittania. Rene Lou, Isidorous, which did not receive a good run. and Half Back headed the remainder. Reticent Wins Again

Reticent won his second race at the meeting when he finished strongly from the home turn to wear down Brigadier Grattan in the Electric Handicap. Red Hackle worked into the lead soon after the start, with Reticent handily placed in the first four or five. Chief Lady took the lead with five furlongs to run and two furlongs farther on Charlotte Belle was sent to the front. Charlotte Belle was shading Brigadier Grattan racing to the straight, with Chief Lady, Reticent, Red Hackle. Coronation Hall and Phantasy handiest of the others.

Charlotte Belle was soon under pressure and Brigadier Grattan was challenged by Reticent. The last-named responded well for J. A. Carmichael and came on to win well by half a length. Brigadier Grattan, the outsider of the field, paced an improved race for second, half a length in front of Charlotte Belle, which battled on gamely. The disappointing favourite, Phantasy, was half a length away fourth, a neck in front of Coronation Hall, with Chief Lady, Johnny Derby and Red Hackle following. Results: —
