PROTEST TO EGYPT
Desecration Of War Memorial
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 9 p.m.) CANBERRA, January 5. The Minister for External Affairs, Mr R. G. Casey, today attacked the Egyptian Government for its failure to apologise to Australia for the desecration of the Australian and New Zealand War Memorial at Port Said. “Together with other Australians, I would like to register my disgust at the reported desecration of the memorial,” he said.
This might have been done by young Egyptian hooligans but he had not seen any public apology by the Egyptian Government. Mr Casey said that no government worthy of the name could condone such an outrage. “Has President Nasser forgotten Jtiat this memorial was erected in honour of Australians and New Zealanders who died in defence of Egypt in the First Great War?” he asked. It was intolerable that a country in whose defence these men lost their lives should now offer this insult to their memory.
