RACING Canon—Rise and Shine For Wingatui Double

(From Out Own Reporter)

DUNEDIN. December 21. There was good drying weather at Wingatui today, and the ground should be good for the first day of the punedm Jockey Club’s cup meeting gt Wingatui tomorrow. The Washdyke-trained Canon is the ruling favourite, but there will be heavy support for the Wingatuitrafned Field Chief, the well-per-formed Southland candidate. Flair, and Writer, of Riccarton. winner of this race last year A caoacity field seems likely, and luck in the running could have an important bearing on the result Rise and Shine may be compensated for some unlucky minor placings in the Publicans’ Handicap, the second leg of the double. The field is a big one. and the result may be determined in the first two furlongs. Rise and Shine is trained at Riccarton by C. G. Humphries, and is a stablemate of Her Ex. the Champagne Stakes favourite, and Watch and Wait, whose good final trial at Wingatui on Thursday showed her fitness for the Dunedin Cup. C. T. Wilson will ride Rise and Shine. Her Ex, and Watch and Wait. Her Ex has firmed in favour because Fidelis is off colour. Fidelis has not trained on since she won the Irwell Handicap at the New Zealand Cup meeting, and she will be put aside for a time.

Fulgent. Mijiji and King’s Lace have dropped out of the Publicans’ Handicap. Divisions Eliminated The Trial Handicap will now be run as one race. Sea Wings. Paper Clip and Hearth Rug dropped out today. The fourth scratching was the Ric-carton-trained Abou Ben Adhem.

Every Night, one of the early favourites for the Warrington Highweight. is an unlikely starter. J. Didham will now ride King Gus. The double acceptors. By Jove and Rex Robe, will start in the highweight. J. D. Pankhurst will ride By Jove, wh.ch holds an alternative engagement in the Berwick Handicap. Meridian will contest the President’s Handicap in preference to the highweight. ’ The Riccarton trainer. R. Preece, said today that Ditched would run in the Mornington Handicap instead of the Berwick Handicap, in which his stablemate. Tripped, is engaged. Peril has been scratched from the Mornington Handicap. There is nothing wrong with the Perilous four-year-old, but it has been considered advisable to give him more time to recover from his trip from Australia. Selections:—
