CHARGES OF KEEPING GAMING-HOUSE

MAGISTRATE RESERVES DECISION (New Zealand Press Association) NAPIER, December 18. Decision was reserved until Monday by Mr W. A. Harlow, S.M., in the Napier Magistrate’s Court yesterday afternoon, when charges of keeping a common gaming-house were brought against two men. The charges resulted from a police raid on the recreation hall at the Whakatu freezing works last Thursday night. The men, Meril Purcell, a 52-year-old labourer, of Hastings, and Ronald Huata, aged 30, of Whakatu. pleaded not guilty. It was stated in evidence that Huata was raking money towards him on a large table when the police arrived. More than £25 was found in his pockets. When the police entered the room,

Purcell made a grab for a crown and anchor cloth on another table in the room, said witnesses. Men were clustered around both tables. Purcell had a rubber shaker, 19 assorted dice, and £95 in his possession.
