ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL

NO MORE MID SEASON TRANSFERS

“POACHING” OF PLAYERS PREVENTED

Through relegation to second division at the end of the qualifying round in the Hurley shield soccer competition. Wigram and Thistle clubs were threatened with the loss of players to other clubs, but action was taken at last night’s meeting of the Canterbury Football Association to prevent this. Before the question was discussed a transfer for R. Sercombe from Wigram to Nomads was sanctioned, but it was later decided that no further transfers could be allowed this season.

The president, Mr M. Gordon, explained that the present system of allowing midseason transfers might mean the end of weaker clubs. The suggestion had previously been put forward that in any season these transfers be allowed only up to January 1. The present discussion concerned transfer of players from relegated clubs, but a decision to disallow transfers would strengthen the position of clubs in disciplining players. As things stood, a player who was stood down for not pulling his weight in a team could transfer to another club.

The secretary, Mr T. McGuigan, pointed out that no remit was required for the committee to take action, as all transfers had to have the sanction of the association. He thought some immediate action was necessary to prevent what amounted to ‘‘poaching’’ of players from the weaker clubs.

Revised Canterbury Squad The Canterbury selector, Mr R. Smith, presented a report on the Wellington match and training of the Canterbury team, which was taken in committee. Afterwards Mr Smith announced a revised squad for training on Thursdays and Sundays which had several changes from his original selection.

The revised list of players is: J. Calligan, A. ''Laffey, F. Haydon, D. Charlton, J. Hunter, R. Durant, C. Steel, A. Van Rooyen, K. Olley, P. Saunderson, W. Logan, H. Botterman, J. Adams, P. Flynn, I. Drewitt, J. Longmuir, C. Banham, J. Cullen. P. Parker, R. Campfens, J. Price. P. Rennell, E. Fields, R. Nicoll, P. Feinstra, A. Calderwood, P. Cole, E. Charlton. Mr Smith said that he would announce the teaiji to meet Otago on June 23 at the meeting next Tuesday, and that the team to travel to Wellington would be announced after the Otago match. It was decided that to avoid damage to the ground, two schoolboys’ games would be played as curtain-raisers to the representative game with Otago at English Park on June 23. These would be Nomads v. Shamrock and Western v. West Christchurch A, all eight grade teams.

At the invitation of the West Coast association, a colts’ team will be, sent to Greymouth for a match on July'l4. A letter was received from the Wellington association stating that no date could be fixed for the return Gordqn Cud match until after the F.A. trophy match on June 30.

The match committee reported that after the completion of the qualifying rounds, Wigram and Thistle first division teams would be relegated to second division and Teachers’ College and Christchurch City would be relegated from the second to third division competition.

The Junior National Council of the New Zealand association advised that Canterbury had a bye in the first round of the Junior National Cup competition. The South Island final would be between Canterbury and the winner of the first round between Otago and Southland.
