THOUGHTFULNESS FOR WIDOW

SOCIAL -SECURITY’S PROMPT ACTION

There are sometimes complaints that the Social Security Department is slow to appreciate the predicament in which a widow may find herseli through lack of finance or advice immediately after the death of her husband. The Christchurch office of the department has won the deep appreciation of one Christchurch woman by its sympathetic letter received within a week of her bereavement. After expressing regret at the death, the letter says the department can assis: by way of benefit under the SociaSecurity Act if there is need of immediate assistance. To enable the Social Security Commission to giv** urgent consideration to the case, it was suggested that an enclosed form be filled in and returned as soon as possible.

There was a reminder that the husband received a superannuation benefit and that any accrued amount may be paid to the widow. “If there is any further information which you would like, kindly let me know and I shall be pleased to assist.’’ the letter said. “Any assistance you may require to complete these forms will be gladly given if you call at the claims section on the ground floor of this office.’’
