BRITISH UNION FUNDS DOWN
(Rec. 11.30 p.m.) LONDON, March 26. Britain’s trade unions are so short of cash that they are forced to dip into rapidly diminishing reserves, a Trade Union Congress survey report showed today. The report said that a survey of union finances had disclosed an unsatisfactory and. in some respects, disquieting position. The cost of running a union is now three time* as hish as it was before World War 11. but contributions have risen on an average by no more than e Quarter.
The survey covered 123 unions with e total membership of 6,854.000. Almost 50 unions spent more in 1954 than they received in contributions in that year. Union subscriptions are expected to be raised. The accumulated funds of the unions amount to £57.630.000. representing little more than £8 a mem her.
