Joining Imperial Airways in 1937, he was posted to Croydon, but later served on internal air services and on flying boats on Empire routes. In 1946 he joined Tasman Empire Airways, returning to New Zealand on the delivery flight of the Awarua, the second Empire-class flying-boat to be delivered to the company.
