New Naval Force Thought Reason (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) SYDNEY, March 26. The visit of the First Sea Lord. Admiral Earl Mountbatten, to Australia and New' Zealand, is believed to be connected with a major reorganisation of the British fleet, the “Sun-Herald” said yesterday. Earl Mountbatten arrived in Darwin today from Rangoon and Singapore to begin a seven weeks’ tour of the two countries. The “Sun-Herald" said that “observers” said the visit might lead to units of the British reserve fleet, now in “mothballs.” being equipped and sent to the South Pacific bases to form the nucleus of a British sea force in the area, capable of waging atomic warfare. The “Sun-Herald” ,safa that Earl Mountbatten is believed to have agreed in talks with the United States Defence Department to a plan for the wide dispersal of British and American naval strength.
