SURPRISE DEFEAT OF CHARLES HUMEZ
(N.Z Press Association—Cor>yriuht) (Rec. 8.30 p.m.) YORK, Mar. 25. Ralph “Tiger” Jones scored a points win over the Frenchn an Charles Humez, European middle-weight boxing champion, in a hard-hitting 10-round bout. Humez, the second-ranking contender for Ray Robinson’s world title, was making his professional debut in the United States, and the defeat was his first in 18 fights. Jones, ranked only eighth among middle-weight contenders, again proved himself the “big occasion” fighter—l 4 months ago he upset Robinson. The decision was so close that Jones took the fight by only one point. Jones took the early initiative. Humez suffered a bad cut over the left eye in the fourth round, and that handicapped Jones more than Humez for the rest of the bout.
Jones, who had been doing well with a free-swinging body attack, tried to gain a technical knock-out by concentrating on the damaged eye. Humez was too good a boxer for him Jones slowed down in the later rounds and was content to pursue Humez sluggishly, with an occasional short burst of combinations to the head. Each time Humez took the barrage, then counter-punched well to head and body. Humez weighed list 51b, and Jones list 341 b. _
