A. E. DIDHAM’S TEAM FOR ELLERSLIE

MA REINE RETURNS TO BEST FORM "The Press*' Special Service

WELLINGTON, March 26. A. E. Didham’s Wingatui team, which has been quartered at Trentham since the Wellington autumn meeting, left today for the north. Ma Reine, Field Chief, and Mighty Dollar went direct to Auckland under the care of I. Lord, and Didham intended to stay at Awapuni to secure quarters for Red Admiral, which is engaged at the Feilding Easter meeting.

Ma Reine is engaged in the Easter Handicap and Field Chief is in the President’s Handicap, the legs of the double on the opening day of the Auckland Easter meeting on Saturday. Ma Re me had slight kidney trouble while she was at Trentham, and she did not reproduce her January form, but she recovered last week and had a brilliant trial over six furlongs on Saturday morning. She has drawn a wide barrier position in the Easter Handicap, but is likely to come in several places as a result of scratchings. As she begins well and runs her best races near the front, she will be entitled to respect in the big mile, in which she has 8-9.

Field Chief was in top form at Trentham. his only start producing a narrow but well-merited win in the President’s Handicap, one mile and a half, with 9-0. This good stayer and proved weight-car-rier will again be strongly fancied with a rise of only 81b at Ellerslie. One horse he may find difficult to beat at the shorter distance is Lingual, which was fourth to him at Trentham, and which will meet him on 41b better terms this week.

Mighty Dollar, which won the Thompson Handicap on the first day at Trentham and which finished sixth in his other engagement, is not engaged on the first day at Auckland, but entries have been made for him on the second and third days.

Red Admiral did not measure up to the class of the Trentham sprinters, but he ran well enough in the Suburban Handicap on the second day to be given a chance in his sprint engagement at Feilaing.

DEVON LOCH TRIED TO CLEAR “GHOST JUMP”

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright)

(Rec. 7.30 p.m.) LONDON, March 25. The Queen Mother's horse, Devon Loch, which stopped within 50 yards of the winning post in the Grand National on Saturday, tried a "jump that never was,” the "Daily Express” said today.

Devon Loch was coasting along to what seemed certain victory when he sprawled with his hindlegs away from him and slithered, lost control of his limbs, and came to a complete stop. The winner, E. 5.8., swept past him to victory.

The "Daily Express” racing writer said Devon Loch took off at an imaginary jump—"a fence that only Devon Loch could see, a ghost jump.”
