NEW CHURCH AT OAKURA

JOINT METHODIST AND ANGLICAN VENTURE (New Zealand Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH. March 26. Described by the president of the Methodist Conference (the Rev. M. A. McDowell, of Lower Hutt) as “a splendid illustration of the move toward Christian unity,” St. James’s Church was opened at Oakura with a combined Anglican and Methodist service. - “Denominationalism” was contrary to the teaching of Christianity, said Mr McDowell. Even spiritual union was not enough. He praised those “organic unions of churches” in South India. “Unity is coming,” Mr McDowell said. “I will not live to see it, but it will come, and the erection of this little church by the people of two denominations is proof of what can be done in unity and a step towards it.” The National Council of Churches in New Zealand and the World Council of Churches were landmarks and living proof of how far unity had progressed, he said. He praised the readiness of the Anglican Church in New Zealand to discuss Methodist proposals at the next General Synod.
