Protests Mount At Exiling Of Makarios
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 11 p.m.) ATHENS, March 25. Patriarch Alexander of Antioch and the Orient has sent telegrams to Sir Anthony Eden, to President Eisenhower and the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Rev. Dr. G. B. Fisher, protesting against the deportation of Archbishop Makarios from Cyprus, it was announced today. The Greek Orthodox Church leader said in his cablegram that he considered the unjustifiable deportation of the Cyprus Primate an offence against the Greek Orthodox world and a violation of the rights of man. Patriarch Vincent of the Serbs has sent a message to the Greek Orthodox Church in Greece expressing sorrow at the Archbishop’s deportation, which he described as “a blow at the conscience of the world.”
[Archbishop Makarios, leader of the Union with Greece movement in Cyprus, is now in exile in the Seychelles Islands in the Indian Ocean.]
London morning newspapers today published a picture of youths in antiBritish demonstrations in Greece which purported to show the cousin of tile Duke of Edinburgh among the marchers.
The picture had an arrow pointing to one boy whom the caption said was the 16-year-old Greek Crown Prince, Prince Constantine, a son of King Paul. The caption said the youths were from leading Athens families. They carried banners expressing sympathy to Archbishop Makarios. Terrorist Leaflets A message from Nicosia says that underground terrorist organisation leaflets were distributed by E.O.K.A. in a Greek church at Kyrenia during a service marking the first Friday in the Greek Lent. The leaflets claimed that the murder of a Greek Cypriot chorister in Kythrea Church was not the work of E.0.K.A., and said that the killing was the work of British agents and had nothing whatever to do with E.O.K.A.
