CRITICISM IN SOVIET

Comment By Mr Mikoyan

(Rec. 9 p.m.) KARACHI. March 25. The basis of the Soviet system was criticism, Mr Mikoyan, a Soviet First Deputy Premier, told reporters in Karachi who questioned him tonight about recent anti-Stalin moves in Russia

“When we do not criticise anybody, everyone says there is no democracy in the Soviet Union.

“But now, when we are critical of Stalin, people are criticising us,” he said.

Mr Mikoyan was attending a reception in his honour at the Soviet Embassy.

He told reporters that he felt Pakistan and Russia were closer together as a result of his present visit to Karachi for celebrations marking the founding of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

Replying to questions. Mr Mikoyan said that the recent Soviet Communist Party Congress in Moscow had reviewed the situation.

It was quite natural to have a critical appreciation of historical events so that mistakes might not be repeated. “Stalin did much, but he also committed mistakes,” he said.
