MR D. MACKAY TO RETIRE

TEACHERS’ COLLEGE PRINCIPAL

WIDE INTEREST IN EDUCATION

Mr Duncan Mackay, M.A., Dip. Ed., who has been principal of the Christchurch Teachers’ College since 1943, will retire at the end of next January. 1 His resignation was received with regret at a meeting of the Canterbury Education Board yesterday. On the administrative side of education, Mr Mackay’s interest ranges from the kindergarten to university level. He w’as chairman of a consultative committee set up to report on the teaching of science in the primary schools, soon after his appointment as principal of the Christchurch Teachers’ - College. The outcome of this report was the major study syllabus used throughout New Zealand. Mr Mackay Was also a member of the Dominion consultative committee on teach'er-training, representing teachers’ training colleges. This com-

mittee brought out the Campbell report, which is the official guide to teacher college development at the present time. A member of the Canterbury University College Council, Mr Mackay was chairman of the academic committee for some years. He is deputychairman of the education committee of the Christchurch Free Kindergarten Association and was deputy-chairman of the Christchurch Post Primary Schools’ Council for some time, representing the Papanui High School board of governors. In 1952, Mr, Mackay was awarded a Carnegie grant and travelled widely in Canada and the United States, where he made a study of teachers’ training colleges and universities, as well as observing schools. Before his appointment to the Christchurch Teachers’ College, Mr Mackay was inspector of schools in the Taranaki district. He was also president of the Returned Services’ Association in New Plymouth. Mr Mackay was a student of the Dunedin Training College and did his early teaching in Southland schools. He graduated M.A. from Caterbury University College and completed his course for the diploma of education.
