BOOKMAKING IN AUCKLAND
Steady Suppression Reported (Neco Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, October 19. Auckland's vice squad—the biggest in New Zealand—was steadily gaining ground against the illegal bookmaker, said the Assistant Commissioner of Police (Mr P. Munro) today. Figures for convictions proved, he said, that there was less bookmaking in Auckland than ever before, but, he added, “The big man is a lot harder to get at than he used to be/’ Publicity in recent years about the campaign against bookmakers had forced the big operators to seek cover behind an elaborate system of agents. As agents were detected, said Mr j Munro, the operators dispensed with them and found new collectors. e Between five and six men are engaged almost full time in Auckland on the detection of gaming offences and vice. Convictions of bookmakers or their agents totalled between 40 and 50 in Auckland every year before new legislation made imprisonment of second offenders automatic. Since then the number of convictions has declined sharply. Figures for this year will be revealed to the House of Representatives in the annual report of the Police Department.
