BUSINESS PROPERTY AUCTIONED

BUILDINGS PASSED IN A property at 21-23 Papanui road, comprising a house of six main rooms and a two-storey factory, which was formerly the premises of Were Bros., manufacturers of aerated waters, was passed in at public auction yesterday at £4700. Bidding began at £4OOO and rose by two bids of £250 and two of £lOO. About 12 persons attended. The premises stand on a section of 38.25 perches which has a frontage of 89 links to Papanui road. Buildings include a store and a garage of 1600 square feet. Were Bros, was an old established business which began in the 1880’s when Allingford and Sons set up plant to produce aerated waters. It was taken over by Mr Charles Were in 1910. He eventually handed over the management to his John Were, in 1929.
