PIPE MAKING PLANT FROM AMERICA

QUOTATION OF £40,000 TO DRAINAGE BOARD Plant from lowa. United States, for making concrete pipes up to 48 inches in diameter, would cost about £40,000, the engineer (Mr E. F. Scott) regorted to the Christchurch Drainage card last evening. That did not allow for installation of plant or for buildings required for steam curing, or for ramps and stacking arrangements. The American company suggested a staff of a foreman and seven men, Mr Scott said. Another two men would be needed for fabrication of reinforcing grids, and the annual wages bill would be about £6OOO. The output of the plant would be greater than the board’s demands, and there would be sales tax and other difficulties if the board was to sell the surplus. Mr Scott was instructed by the board to seek further information on pipe manufacturing from the Ministry of Works.
