COLOMBO PLAN AID
N.Z. Grants Extra £1,000,000 (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 11.30 p.m.) SINGAPORE, October 19. The New Zealand Minister of External Affairs (Mr T. L. Macdonald) told the Colombo Plan countries today that New Zealand would allocate an additional £1,000,000 for “agreed projects” in the plan during 1955-1956. He said that meant that New Zealand now had £1,500,000 available for use under the plan. Mr Macdonald said: “A policy of careful checking would be continued before New Zealand invested capital in any project. It would be fatal to the future success of the plan if any suggestion of lack of prudence would be made. “If that were so, with consequent charges of waste and extravagance, then it would be very difficult for the Government of a country like my own to justify a continuation of contributions,” he said.
Mr Macdonald said New Zealand would like to see more Asian students in that country. ”1 believe that we must expand our technical assistance. We have facilities and we want to see more trainees in New Zealand. I hope other member governments will bear this in mind when planning their future technical aid programmes.”
