BRITAIN’S BIG TRADE GAP
July Deficit Of £107,800,000 (N.Z. Press (Rec. 8 pan ) LONDON, Aug. 11. Britain’s trade gap, which is causing the Government concern and has brought on a major financial “squeeze” iu recent weeks, amounted to £107,800,000 in July. Sir Anthony Eden has called a meeting of his Ministers for Monday to discuss the economic situation among other subjects. Imports cost £338,000,000, while exports. and re-exports were valued at £231,000,000. a The gap was narrowed by £21,100,000 compared with the figure for June, when the dock and rail strikes affected the nation’s economy. But it was still much wider than the monthly average for the first half of the £75,600,000. The Board of Trade announced that July trade continued to be substantially affected by the transport strikes. The flow of exports did not get back to normal till after the middle of July. The statement struck an encouraging note by recording: “By the end of the month, the flow had in fact become well above normal.” > But it will probably be some montns before the direct effect of the strikes ceases to show in the monthly figures.
