CURRENT NOTES
Mrs R. Renton Bell, Holmwood road, Fendalton, will leave on Monday for Auckland, and the following day will leave by air fop a visit to the United States. Mrs Peter Mating (Heaton street) will leave on Monday by air for Auckland to meet her husband, Dr. Mating, who will arrive on Wednesday from England. Mrs Mating will be the guest in Auckland of Mrs W. Manchester. Dr. and Mrs Mating will spend a few days in Auckland and will return to Christchurch at the week-end. Mr and Mrs John Deans (Riccarton), who have been spending some months in England, are returning to New Zea land by the Rangitata, due in Wellington on Thursday. Miss Coral Bognuda, a Wellington student of the ’cello, has been awarded a bursary by the French Government to enable her to continue her studies at the Paris Conservatoire. Mrs James Mating (Victoria Mansions), who has been for a short visit to England and Canada, will arrive in Auckland by air on Wednesday, and win return to Christchurch on Thursday.
There was a good attendance at the August meeting of the Little River Garden Club. Mrs R. Webb presided. Mrs Len Hove gave a talk on flowers of the Netherlands. Competitions resulted as follows:—decorative, Mrs EL Webb 1, Mrs N. Davidson 2, Mrs A. A. Hutchinson 3; three early spring flowers, Mrs Hutchinson 1, Mrs J. Patterson 2; large bloom, Mrs Hutchinson 1. Mrs L. Lewthwaite 2, Mrs E. Ussher 3; small bloom, Mrs E. Henderson 1, Mrs J. Lewthwaite 1 The hostesses were Mesdames J. Flynn, E. Hunt, L. Collins and Miss M Patten. Mrs R. Rimmer presided at the August meeting of the C ristchurch North Townswomen's Guild. Reports were given by the following circle leaders:—singing (Mrs Arnold), drama [Mrs Benson), arts and crafts (Mrs Bishop), gardening (Mrs Davies). The drama circle, under the leadership of Mrs G. Benson, presented a comedy. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Scrimegeour. Smith, Scott, Seaion and Reddell Mrs A. J. Hall presided at the August meeting of the BeckenhamHuntsbury Garden Club. Mr G Barton gave a talk on the vegetable garden. The hostesses were Mrs W Abrams and Mrs R. Penny. The ra’es table was conducted by Mrs- F. A Judkins and Mrs E. F. Johnson was the steward. Competitions resulted: —arrangement of spring flowers, A cteo. Mrs H. D. Robson 1, Mrs L D. Roberts and V. August meeting of the Sprey-ton-Hoon Hay Townswomen’s Guild, nrs Trevena gave an interesting talk m samplers and gave members some dea of the value and age of the treas bad brought to the meeting drs Hill (finance), Mrs Yandle (ark md crafts), Mrs McCracken (garden - Tfcylor (singing), and Mrs Saville (drama) gave reports. Mn G. J. H. Barton presided at the august meeting of the Home Economics Association garden circle. Mrs C. E Soon was welcomed as a guest (or he afternoon. Mr E. H. Barton gave m informative talk on the vegetable &a«Jen. and was thanked by Miss C Wardle. The competitions, iudgeu >y Mr Barton, resulted as follows: R- D. Louissori presided at the nonthly evening meeting of the Young fives’ and Mothers’ Group of St rohn’s Church, Latimer square. “Life n India” was the subject of an in eresting talk by Miss E. Kent-Joho-ton- She told of her personal experiences and displayed many treasured >osBesBions. Mrs Louisson thanked Miss and presented her with i box of spring flowers. A compeliwn was won by Mrs McAlister.
