FAMILY ALLOWANCE

Sir,—l would like to draw the attention of “A.FJ».” to hi« faulty arithmetic, so that he may think again and realise that, for anybody on a small income and with more children, the family allowance ia a "hand-out” by the Government. It is paid primarily by single folks and by Jhose people whose children are 'm'bre than 16 years of age (18 in some cases). A man’f receiving a weekly wage of £l2 (£624 per annum) pays £46 16s a year in social security tax; and if he has two children £52 a year is paid back in family allowance, although the children may be receiving (as some receive) as much as £5 a week tax-free wages while under the age of 16 years.—Yours, etc., WHY GRUMBLE. August 12, 1955.
