BOXING

SURPRISE DEFEAT OF JOHNNY SULLIVAN (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 8 p.m.) LIVERPOOL, August 11. Archie Towne, a 27-year-old coloured middle-weight boxer from New York, surprised boxing fans tonight when he stopped the former British and Empire champion, Johnny Sullivan, in 43 seconds of a scheduled eight-round fight. It was the first time Sullivan failed to go the distance, and the first time he was ever floored by a punch. Towne sent Sullivan to the canvas three times with powerful lefts and rights to the chin. The referee stopped the fight to save the British boxer from further punishment.
