SURVIVAL COURSE FOR AIRMEN
WIGRAM PARTY TO GO TO LAKE SUMNER Next Tuesday 16 pupil pilots and navigators from the Hoyal New Zealand Air Force Flying School, Wigram, with three instructors and two staff members, will take part in a survival course in the Lake Sumner area. The course-is considered an essential part of the training of all aircrew, and is designed , to .teach them how to support themselves if they bale out or crashland in remote areas. The party w>ll be taken by truck to Lake Taylor, and from there will continue on foot to Lake Sumner. The trainees will receive instruction in the best i way to make their way across country through valleys, over hills and across rivers. Usey will also be taught how to trap animals for food, and how to live off the .country generally. However, they will not be thrown entirely on their own resources, as sufficient condensed and foods will be carried to enable them to sustain themselves. They will also be in touch by visual signals with aircraft which will visit the area regularly. 1 The party will work in syndicates under the supervision of the instructors, and will be trained in the best methods of traversing different kinds of terrain and navigating across country. They will return to Wigram on AUgust 21.
