MILK
Sir,—There is some deficiency in solids-not-fat in the milk of some of the local Friesian cattle. Is there a lowering of the solids-not-fat in other cattle breeds grazed in Canterbury? In other words, although complying with the regulation requirements, is it lower than elsewhere in the Dominion? Is this partly due to climate? Canterbury has the nearest approach to a Continental climate, with sudden extremes of heat and cold, together with areas of damp, low-lying lands, and an absence of sufficient shelters. Canterbury is a goiterous area, the potassium iodide being leached out of the soil. Is it not possible that some other essentials may be lacking also in the soil on which the cattle foodstuffs are grown? There is no evidence that the New Zealand-born child is subject to rickets; hence each gets all the solids-not-fat that is necessary for its re-quirements.-—Yours, etc., T. FLETCHER TELFORD. August 9, 1955.
Sir,—Like “Winter Milker” and “Moo Moo,” I am a mug who supplies the Metropolitan Co-operative Milk Association and receives Is 2d a gallon (quota price. 3s OJd). (1) When we| producers receive this reduce i price,' does Wright’s treatment station also receive a reduction in treatment prices? (2) What happens to this surplus milk at Is 2d? (3) Is this milk ever put in deep freeze and sold later? Is any*of this ..iilk sold to the Dairy Fa« mers’ Co-operative Milk Supply Company? (5) If so. at what price?— Yours etc.. WINTER MILKER No. 2. August 1. 1955. [“This letter is misleading in .that ‘Winter Milker No. 2’ conveys the erroneous impression that he has re* ceived Is 2d a gallon, as against 3s Old, the latter price including 2d a gallon winter feed allowance,” said Mr P. L. C. Inder. secretary and manager of the Metropdlitan Milk Supplies Co-op., when he was asked to reply to “Winter Milker No. 2.” “Actually he has received 3s Old a gallon for his quota supply and the national milk price of 2s BJd a gallon for 50 per cent, of his surplus supply. As the payout to suppliers is a matter for the internal management of the company, ‘Moo-Moo’ and ‘Winter Milkers’ numbers 1 and 2. are invited to attend the next meeting of directors on August 17.” “Our company purchases no milk other than from its own producers,” said Mr L. R. Fowler, manager of the Canterbury Dairy Farmers’ Co-op. Milk Supply Company, Ltd., in his reply to question 4 of this letter.]
