Relation To Big Four Talks
(Rec. 11.30 p.m.) ♦ WASHINGTON, June 8. The Soviet invitation to the German Chancellor, Dr. Adenauer, to go to Moscow for talks made it “doubly important for the State Department to c&fisider the German position” in its advance planning for the projected top level Big Four conference, the “Washington Post” said today. “Dr. Adenauer has voiced his opposition to any deal for unification in return for neutrality and he can be trusted to safeguard the Western interest in any direct talks with the Russians,” the newspapy said. Adequate representation of West German views would be imperative at the preliminary meeting of the Foreign Ministers in San Francisco, not only because Germany had become a big Power, but also because German reunification would be a primary topic at the top level. “The invitation to Chancellor Adenauer to discuss diplomatic relations and trade in Moscow—a remarkable display of flexibility in view of the previous Soviet attitude—emphasises the urgency of a common approach,” the newspaper said.
