GAINS CLAIMED FOR SOVIET
Talks In Belgrade And Vienna
(Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, June 8. The “Evening Standard” said in a leading article today that in the last few weeks Russia had gained “two immense diplomatic triumphs”—the neutralisation of Austria and its success at the Belgrade talks. The “Evening Standard” noted that many people were expressing great satisfaction over the Russian trip to Jugoslavia. Western commentators had emphasised the concessions the Jugoslavs won during the talks, and the retreats which the Russians had. made. But this “high good humour” overlooked the real truth, the newspaper said. On Austria, it said that unless the Russians had “conceded” the Austrian Treaty, Austria would without doubt have become the faithful ally of the Western Powers.
On the Belgrade talks the newspaper said that Jugoslavia had the best army raised in Europe, and one of the toughest and most astute leaderships. . The Russians had neutralised this important force just as it .seemed to be entering the Western camp.
