REDUCTION TO 3D AT BELFAST

The charge for slot telephone boxes in Belfast will be reduced from 4d to 3d a call on a date which has not yet been announced. A call will be made with three pennies. Belfast residents, through their association, recently expressed dissatisfaction with the 4d charge, and Mr McDonald took the matter un with the member of Parliament for the district (the Minister of Railways, Mr J. K. McAlpine). The Postmaster-General (Mr T. P. Shand) has now advised that, when Post Office rates were increased in July, 1950, the charge for a call in Belfast should have been increased from 2d to 3d, but the telephone mechanism had not then been altered to take the new charges. When facilities were provided for after-hour toll calls to be made from the box outside the Post Office, the charge was increased to conform with that for a three-minute toll call. That charge was increased from 3d to 4d when new toll rates were introduced in February. Because of the residents’ representations the matter had now been reviewed, the Minister advised
