NEARLY £69,000 SPENT IN YEAR
A fortunate purchase of tea enabled a saving of £9OO to be made, on a comparison with ruling prices, says the section of the North Canterbury Hospital Board's annual report devoted to expenditure on food. At the Christchurch Hospital' alone, nearly £69,000 was spent on food last year. The report says that 33,4001 b of quick-frozen vegetables were issued during the year—an increase of 50001 b on the previous year. The items used were peas, beans and com, peas accounting for two-thrids of the total. The main items of expenditure on food at the Christchurch Hospital were: groceries, £18,308 (26.6 per cent, of the total); fruit and vegetables, £13,794 (20 per cent.); meat, £12,845 (19 per cent); milk,- £9905 (14 per cent.); eggs, £4499 (6.6 per cent.); fish and poultry, £4421 (6.5 per cent.); butter, £2759 (4 per cent.); and bread and cereals, £2268 (3.3 per cent.). The average number of patients and staff fed each day was 1123.6.
