Test Of U.S. Civil Defences

(Rec. 10 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Apl. 20. The National Guard held its first nation-wide alert tonight in a surprise test of its ability to cope with an enemy attack. The simulated defence activities, involving an estimated 400,000 guardsmen, are scheduled to continue until early Thursday morning. The operation was expected to give the chief defence planners some idea of how the guard would cope with atomic air attacks, sabotage, or enemy paratroop raids on key military and industrial areas.
