Admiral Arthur Radford, chairman St the United States Joint Chiefs of IHaff, unexpectedly flew to Formosa* He declared that the Chinese Communist air build-up on the China maintad ] proved that the Communists still I intend to take Formosa by force, if Necessary. Adnjiral Radford added that a Communist attack on Formosa seemed no more imminent now than it did three months ago. He asserted that Nationalist and united States defence forces on Formosa “are as ready as we can be.” Admiral Radford and Mr Walter Bobertson, Assistant Secretary of State »r Far Eastern Affairs, left for Formosa about two hours after the De«®ce and State Departments had a’nnounced that the two officials were B®ng there in view of the “highly mnse and highly serious” situation. The Secretary of State (Mr Dulles), *no left for a brief holiday in Canada, said the fact that the two offiwere going to Formosa did not demonstrate a crisis. But he did call the situation “admittedly serious.”
