THROWING OF STONE AT ENGINE

DEFENDANT FINED 15/(New Zealand Press Association) NAPIER, April 18. Donald Orme Wilson, a labourer, of Auckland, who threw a stone at a slow-moving railway engine and hit the driver, was fined 15s, with costs £1 10s, by Mr W. A. Harlow, S.M., in the Napier Magistrate’s Court today. Senior-Sergeant C. E, Tanner said that the train appr'-’ched the railway crossing at West. Shore, about three miles from Napier, at 6.15 p.m. on January 4. A group of young men was standing outside the hotel there. One of them picked up a stone, threw it at the engine, and hit the driver, Mr R. C. Boniface. Wilson later came back and apologised to Mr Boniface, but refused to accept full responsibility for the incident.

Wilson had shown some moral courage in returning and apologising to the driver, said the Magistrate. “Had he not done so, the penalty would have been substantial,” he added.
