ATTLEE’S VIEW

“Purely U.S. Venture”

(IV.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 9p.m.) WINNIPEG (Manitoba), April 13. _Mr Attlee, the leader of the British Labour Party, said today that the defence of Formosa was not Britain’s pigeon at all.” “I’m not in favour of defending Formosa, he told reporters in commenting on suggestions that Britain should aid in defence of the Nationalist-held S I?' T*, l do ”’ t think it’s our pigeon at all. It’s not even a United Nations snow. Its purely an American venture.

At a press conference here, Mr Attlee said he favoured neutralisation of Formosa for a time and then the holding of a plebiscite. Formosa’s inhabitants would choose between joining Communist China or remaining under the Nationalist regime of Marshal Chiang Kai-shek. He said Marshal Chiang should be exiled from Formosa before any plebiscite was held. Mr Attlee said he believed the current China policy of the United States was a “mistake.

Asked what policy he would advocate if Communist China attacked Hong Kong, Mr Attlee replied: “We will deal with that question if it ever arises.”

The British Labour Party leader is on a cross-Canada lecture tour under the auspices of the Co-Operative Commonwealth Federation (Socialist Party).
