Footballers Seek Asylum
(NJZ. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 8.10 p.m.) NICE, April 18. Five young Jugoslav footballers, who disappeared yesterday when their team was due to return to Belgrade, appeared at a Nice police station today. They were accompanied by a Jugoslav exile leader who said they had told him they had had enough of life in a “popular democracy” and intended to ask for political asylum. The footballers, all between 17 and 20, who had been taking part in an international junior tournament, walked out of their quarters with their luggage yesterday when they were due to catch their train home.
The rest of the team left by a later train.
