TRACK WORK AT RICCARTON

OKARURU SPRINTS ATTRACTIVELY FAST FIVE FURLONGS BY AVENGE Okaruru, which will have his only race at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s autumn meeting in the Waltham Handicap tomorrow, showed his fitness by sprinting six furlongs fast on the plough at Riccarton yesterday. The Champagne Stakes winner, Avenge, with Royal Warrant for a companion, covered five furlongs attractively on the outside of the course proper. Motueka and Seven Seas also galloped well over this distance. A quiet morning’s work was done under ideal conditions and on fast tracks. Okaruru (D. J. Thistoll) galloped six furlongs keenly on the plough in Imin 15 4-saec. He had pace on from the start and did well to rim his last half-mile in 50 4-ssec and the concluding three furlongs in 38 2-ssec. Seven Seas (L. J. Ellis) and Motueka (C. McDonald), two of the earliest trialists on the outside of the course proper, sprinted home on terms from the five furlongs. They recorded 49sec for the last half-mile and did their work well. Avenge (B. P. Wood) galloped faster with Royal Warrant (D. F. Coombe) later in the morning. These’ two recorded 48 1- for the last half-mile and finished on terms. The Woodville stablemates, Toparoa (B. P. Wood) and Honest John (R. D. Selwood), sprinted from the half-mile, finishing on terms in 49 2-ssec. Dixie Leigh (M. D. Alexander) sprinted home from the six furlongs in Imin 18 2- She had Blue Count (C. McDonald) for a companion over the last five and a half furlongs, and they recorded 50 3- for the last half-mile. Blue Count appeared to be feeling the ground when he was trotted in the middle after his trial. Alb (D. J. Thistoll) ran home from the seven furlongs in Imin 34 2-ssec. recording 52 2-ssec for the last half-mile. Wingatul Visitors . The Wingatul pair. Field Chief (A. N. Didham) and Ma Reine, could have bettered their time of 52 1-ssec for the last four of five furlongs. They finished on terms. On the plough Tamrin (A. J. Stokes) easily ran six furlongs in Imin 20sec, the last three in 40 3-ssec. Ark Royal, ridden by his trainer, A. I. Powell, sprinted from the half-mile in 51 3-ssec, the last three furlongs in 38 3-ssec. Melinda Jane (R. W. Gould) showed her fitness for her engagement in the Gimcrack Handicap on Saturday by dashing home from the five furlongs in Imin 1 3- She ran the last four furlongs in 49 l-ssec and the concluding three in 36 4- Melinda Jane did not race earlier at the meeting. Declare (A. J. Stokes) recorded Imin 19 2-ssec for six furlongs, and 39sec for the final three. Sir William (L. J. Ellis) gave Half-a-Crown (K. Nuttall) a start from the mile and beat him by a neck. Sir William’s time for the distance was Imin 46 3-ssec, and for the last half-mile 52 2-ssec. Demand (B. Parsons) ran faster over this distance soon after. He recorded Imin 44 2-ssec, and 50sec for the last halfmile. Gold Scheme (L. J. Ellis) drew up in the straight to beat Accountant (D. F. Coombe) after running six furlongs in Imin 18sec, the last four in 51 3-ssec. Gold Scheme will make a fresh start in the Challenge Stakes on Saturday. He has not raced since he won the Sydney Cup a year ago. The Great Autumn Handicap winner, Ray Ribbon (C. McDonald), was not hurried in his sprint from the five furlongs. He finished his task in Imin 18sec, after running the first two furlongs In 27 4-ssec. Skylight (C. T. Wilson) and Montrose (D. F. Coombe) sprinted from the halfmile in 52 4-ssec and finished on terms. Montrose, a double acceptor on Saturday, is expected to run in the Challenge Stakes. Teko (M. D. Alexander) was galloping keenly three-quarters of a length clear of Barbara Dare (F. H. Skelton) and Mandrake (T. J. Smith), ending five furlcngs in Imin 5 3-ssec, the last four in 53 2-5 sec and the concluding three in 40 l-ssec. De Bracey (A. J. Stokes) and Scotch Gift (N. Eastwood), both members of E. J. Ellis’s Washdyke team, galloped keenly over half a mile in 49 l-ssec and finished on terms. It was an attractive trial.
