U.S. ECONOMIC AID IN ASIA
ACTION THROUGH U-N. . URGED fiyew Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 13. Tbe United Nations Association of New Zealand considers that President Eisenhower’s programme of economic aid to South-east Asia should be channelled through the United Nations. A cablegram from Washington yesterday said that the President would submit to Congress next week a foreign aid programme, “including economic aid to the free nations of Southeast Asia.” “The United Nations has z the necessary machinery to put such assistance into immediate action,” says the association. “By channelling assistance through the United Nations organisation, the prestige of the organisation would be considerably enhanced. Moreover, at a time when so many difficult problems are before the united Nations, its position as a body designed to promote the welfare of all nations could be considerably weakened in the eyes of those needing assistance.”
