IMPORT DUTIES ON PEARL BARLEY
COMMISSION OF INQUIRY RESERVES DECISION (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, February 24. The commission of inquiry in import duties on pearl barley today reserved its decision on a sliding scale of duty and retention of import control. The industry was open to “unfair competition," said the secretary of the New Zealand Pearl Barley Manufacturers’ Association. Mr L. K. Jones. Last year, when New Zealand had a surplus of the commodity, it was being imported from Australian merchants who were quoting a special low price for export. The New Zealand surplus had eventually been used up as stock feed, but it was a ridiculous situation when Searl barley was imported from Austraa while there was a surplus here. It was a situation that showed what happened when import control was lifted and a fixed duty of only l%d per lb was levied, said Mr Jones.
. Sir David Smith was chairman of the commission, and its other two members Mr G. W. Clinkard and Mr D. I. Macdonald.
