ROADS COUNCIL AT KAIKOURA
i SEALING PROGRAMME > PROGRESS ! A motion congratulating the engin- • eering team and contractors on a mag--1 nificent 12 months’ work in the Pjc-ton-Christchurch State highway sealing programme was recorded at a meeting of the Number 13 District Roads Council at Kaikoura yesterday. A report had been presented by the chairman (Mr F. D. Grant), assistant district engineer of the Ministry of Works, who said that ?5 miles of sealing had been completed. At that rate of progress the 52 miles remainihg to be sealed in the council’s area would be completed in two years instead of three as originally estimated. Mr Grant reviewed the special work ■ which would be needed on sections of , the north-south highway. i The basic plan for the Lewis Pass l route would be a 12-foot highway. The • possibility of. the route being brought up to a class -one highway loading , rested mainly on bridging. Of 11 bridges planned, six had been com- . pleted, but the key to the scheme was I the Hope river bridge. The impor- ; tance of this route as an arterial road t when railway blockages occurred was stressed by members from the area. . Yesterday afternoon members of the I board made an inspection of the Kaii koura county as far as the proposed ■ deviation at the Shades and the southern approach to the road-rail bridge . over the Clarence river.
