ATHLETICS R.N.Z.A.F. MEETING AT WIGRAM

J. K. MCDONALD WINS MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIPS

J. K. McDonald, who won the men’s championship at the annual athletic meeting of the Royal New Zealand Air Force Station at Wigram yesterday, broke two records. His time of 2min o.Bsec for the half-mile was o.2sec faster than K. E. Williams's winning time last year, and his time of 4min 34sec for the mile was a reduction of 13.&ec on the record set by Williams in 1953.

M. K. Potaka won the women’s championship title. She was placed first in three events and in one of them, the shot put, she set a new record. Her distance of 24ft lOin was a full foot better than the record made in 1950 by R. R. Rophia. The wing championship went to No. 2 Trade Training School and General Service Training School competitors, who gained 121 points. The technical wing was second (60 points), and the Administrative wing was third with 59 points. His time was 14min : 34.25ec. He is the Wellington provincial marathon title-holder. The standard Wellington provincial time for the race is 15min. Taylor’s time is ssec faster than the winning time for the event at the 1954 New Zealand championships.
