20.7 Gallons A Head Last Year

PRODUCTION VALUED AT £12,092,000

New Zealanders* consumption of beer and stout last year averaged 20.7 gallons for each person, according tq figures in the January Abstract of Statistics. In 1953 the consumption was 19.3 gallons per head of population, and in 1952 19.4 gallons. The most recent figures available show that Australia averages 22.3 gallons a head a year. Britain’s consumption is 18 gallons a head. The Australian and New Zealand average consumption has been increasing over recent years, while that of the British has shown a small but steady decrease. The amount of beer produced in New Zealand in the year 1953-54 amounted to 41,102,000 gallons—an increase of 1,746,000 gallons or 4.4 per cent, over the previous year. In the last five years, the Abstract says, the production of beer has increased by 10,000,000 gallons, a rise of 32.2 per cent. The total value of beer and stout produced in 1953-54 was £12,092.000, of which £5,801,000 went to the Government in beer duty.
