OBITUARY
MISS L. M. EARLY
M’.ss Louisa Margaret Early, who has died in Auckland, was the last member of an old pioneering family. She was the youngest child of Captain Edward Anthony Early, of Lyttelton. Miss Early trained as a nurse in Napier, and her duties led her into many and varied places and positions. She inaugurated medical inspection in schools in the Auckland district, and organised camps during an outbreak of typhoid among the Maoris in North Auckland. During the influenza epidemic of 1918, Miss Early efficiently controlled treasures taken in the Herne Bay-Ponsonby area. With her late sister, who was a returned Army nursing sister of the First World ’" T ar, Miss Early kept open house for servicemen in the Second World War passing through to camps or on leave. Soldiers were always sure of a good meal and a bed at the ’ittle stone house in Parnell rofed, and when they went overseas many of them were grateful for the cakes "’hich Miss Early baked and sent in great numbers.
MRS IDA L. ANDREWS A prominent worker in the New Zealand Red Cross Society and well known in Wellington for her interest in the theatre and public affairs, Mrs Ida L. Andrews died recently after an illness of six months. Mrs Andrews became the first Dominion secretary of the Red Cross and joint secretary of the Council of the Red Cross Society and Order of St. John, after an active association with the society. Later Mrs Andrews was secretary of tl-e Wellington Musical Comedy Company, a member of the Royal Wellington Choral Union, the Thespians, the Wellington Repertory Theatre, and the Pjekakariki Women’s Dramatic 3oMetx.
