RACING RICCARTON SUMMER MEETING

Fulgent And Clinker For Double

CORNFLAKE SELECTED TO WIN HACK RACE

Fulgent and Clinker remain in favour for their respective S ce * ** the Canterbury Jockey Club’s summer meeting at Kiccarton today, and they form a likely combination for the double. • h? 8 done everything right in his preparation, and in his final trial on Thursday morning he put rare dash into his work. The Riccarton-trained Red Mars gelding runs out one mile and a quarter very well, and some of those opposed to him today are expected to be struggling behind him at the end. O ne that may not be, however, Americus, which, although only just out of hack class, promises to develop into a fine stayer. Americus won one race at the Wellington Cup meeting last month, and he was unlucky not to win at his other attempt at Trentham. He will appreciate the much lighter weight he has now, and can be relied upon to distinguish himself in this field. D- P* Wilson’s veteran gelding, The Hob, arrived at Riccarton on Thursday evening, looking very well. He won in a canter against a sprint field at Winton last Saturday, and looks to be ready to make another bold bid. These three will probably carry the most support, and of the others Declare appeals the most.

Clinker travelled well on the trip from. Dunedin, and he is expected to be ready to make amends in the Craven Plate for his disappointing efforts at Trentham. He has too much class to be left out of calculations in a race such as this, and with a good W; his Trentham ngers are exLord Rowallan, Form rentham . form rospect for the j>. one mile and , a quarter, and he is selected to win. He will only have to produce the effort that gained for him second ■ placing in the Douro Hack Handicap i to have the field he meets today in j trouble. < Bon Soir, which won over this dis- < I tance at Hororata last Saturdav, but i ! lost the race after an inquiry, is ex- 1 ■ pected to run well again. He has been a model of consistency this sea- J son, and is up to the task of carrying < his top-weight of 9st 11b. ( Goldwyn advanced in favour for this ' race when he worked impressively at '■ ■ Riccarton on Thursday morning. The Cassock gelding shows his best ability on big courses, and this distance should suit him. Colonel Hunt, Adversary, and Ptar- i migan look the pick of the others. In a field which does not appear : strong. Millrace may have his con- 1 sistent record this season rewarded by < success. Since being ridden in behind ; he has run his races out very strongly, and his placing at Hororata on Saturday was full of merit. ■ _ Assembly has the ability to show up ! in this field, and Pat’s Treasure, on her good effort at Hororata, is also ex- ( pected to race well. Devalue, Merriment, and Silver Trumpet are others conceded a chance here. Motueka Should Win Scratchings have considerably re- , duced the Middle Park Plate field, and . Motueka will be at short odds for this * race. He has raced consistently for J three wins and several creditable plac- < ings, and his experience should stand ; him In good stead today. Red Elf and Persian Melody may be c the most likely to trouble Motueka. Gold Trend’s consistent form in c strong hack company at the Welling- 5 ton Cup meeting entitles him to a r strong winning chance in the Lyttel- ( ton Hack Handicap, in which Watch ( *nd Wait, Golden Morn, and Leprechaun should also race prominently. The first division of the Trial Stakes ■ppears to be the weaker of the two, and Kiaree Beau, which was a little unlucky in finishing no closer than 3 fourth at Hororata last Saturday, may open his winning account. Expend- J able, a fast-finishing fourth over seven furlongs at Wingatui at his latest start. i and the speedy Inlay, which worked 3 brilliantly in company with Russleigh c during the week, should also show f «pThe consistent Royal Glade is ( favoured for the second division, but she may have to work hard to stall off Woo<£ haUeDgeS ° f Shoal and Ri P° n Brown Baron. Demand, and Des- ! P*rado look the pick of the Hornby j High-weight field, with Trustworthy c also rated a chance. ; Prospects and Fields { HJE a.m.—Hornby High-weight RanOicap: Brown Baron, Demand, Desperado. PRINCE CORTAULD WORKS WELL

Plans To Run In Rich Autumn Races (NZ. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec, 7 p.m.) SYDNEY, February 4. Prince Cortauld yesterday could not gallop slowly enough for Farquhar in a Randwick track trial. Prince Cortauld has done very well since his "first-up" second to Gay Vista in the Challenge Stakes (six furlongs) last Saturday. He will leave today for Melbourne to race in the important distance races at the Caulfield and Flemington autumn carnivals. His programme will include the £5OOO Alister Clark Stakes (one mile and a quarter), on February 26, and the £lO,OOO Queen Elizabeth Stakes (one mile and a half), on March 14. Prince Cortauld yesterday ran an unusual trial. With Farquhar, Prince Cortauld dashed over half a mile on the steeple grass in 53isec. Only half of this track is available for gallops, so the pair trotted again to the starting point and then galloped another half mile. They reduced their time to 52Jsec, but Prince Cortauld travelled so quickly over the last three furlongs in 37Jsec that he left Farquhar behind and won the trial by four lengths. Prince Cortauld’s fast finish on a rainsoddened ground convinced trackmen that he is certain to be better than ever this autumn. The smart New Zealand two-year-old, Knave, will accompany Prince Cortauld on the trip to Melbourne. Knave will contest the important two-year-old classics —the Merson Cooper (£2500), Sires’ Produce Stakes (£4000), and Ascot Vale Stakes (£2000). In his gallop yesterday. Knave ran an easy half-mile unextended in 52|sec.
